Is it possible for Lawrence to turn one of the common rooms into a gym?

In the past, the Lawrence Committee has floated the idea of equipping some of the common rooms with exercise equipment. If this were to happen, the room would need to be managed by Campus Recreation, who would need to send personnel to oversee the room whenever it was open. Because of the effort and money — for both equipment and paying someone from Campus Rec — that would be required to set up even a small exercise room, Housing has discourage the committee from setting up an exercise room.

Some residents may ask “the people at Lakeside Apartments have a gym, why can’t we get one?” Lakeside is managed by an external company that is not under the jurisdiction of Campus Housing. This external company takes all the liability for setting up and running an exercise room. Because Lawrence is run directly by the university, Campus Housing and Campus Recreation would need to directly assume liability for the exercise room, hence why there would be much more work involved in setting up a room here.
